Obesity is one of the leading risk factors for developing cardiovascular diseases and its incidence has increased in recent years. It is estimated that the incidence of obesity in the world is estimated to reach 11.6 billion people and it is estimated to affect up to 5% of all adults [
]. The rising prevalence of obesity is primarily due to the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. This is the second leading cause of death globally with the highest incidence in Asia, followed by in Europe and Africa. Obesity can be reduced or even reversed by lifestyle choices, including medications such as the use of a diet high in fat, and by physical activity.
Obesity is a significant problem that can have a major impact on health, with its prevalence in the general population increasing from an average of 10.1% in the United States in the 1980s to 16.3% in the United Kingdom in the mid-twentieth century. The rise in obesity is a major public health concern globally, and it is predicted to increase by ~20% per year until 2030 due to the prevalence of overweight in the population and the associated increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes [
In addition, there are numerous studies in Europe where the prevalence of obesity is increasing and the number of overweight-related chronic diseases is also increasing, indicating a possible link between obesity and cardiovascular disease. Moreover, lifestyle modifications, including weight loss and exercise, are effective strategies for managing obesity, such as losing weight and reducing the amount of calories consumed [
There are several studies on the use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications for weight management. These include medications such as Orlistat and Orlistat Injectable (Xenical, Alli, and Xenical Xr) and the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), indomethacin [
], or lansoprazole [
The combination of these medications has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and some type of metabolic syndrome, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have suggested that lifestyle modifications, such as reducing the amount of fat ingested and/or losing weight, can be effective in preventing cardiovascular disease [
,
These recommendations are supported by studies in several countries, including the United States, Japan, and Australia [
However, these guidelines are not generalizable to all countries in the world and, therefore, it is difficult to draw conclusions on the use of OTC medications in obese patients. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of OTC medications for weight management in patients with obesity in Spain.
We included all patients with a body mass index (BMI) <30 kg/m2 or with a body mass index ≥28 kg/m2 who met the inclusion criteria and who underwent weight management. The study was conducted in the Department of Cardiology, General Hospital of the University of Silesia and the Department of Internal Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine, the University of the lucky number, University of the lucky number, and the Department of Internal Medicine, General Hospital of the University of Silesia. The study was approved by the Committee of Medical Ethics (CEI) of the Faculty of Medicine and the Ethics Committee of the University of the lucky number. Informed written informed consent was obtained from all the patients before the study was conducted.
For the treatment of obesity in patients with an estimated body mass index (BMI) ≥28 kg/m2 (age ≥18 years), a questionnaire was sent to the patients. The questionnaire included a questionnaire regarding the following questions: (1) the risk of cardiovascular events; (2) the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases and/or metabolic conditions; (3) the occurrence of any chronic diseases; and (4) the prevalence of any type of chronic diseases (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Patients were asked to provide a medical history, medical history, and the diagnosis of obesity (i.e., BMI ≥30 kg/m2 or BMI ≥28 kg/m2) for the first time. The questionnaires were used to determine the prevalence of obesity and to determine the presence of obesity (i.e., BMI ≥28 kg/m2 or BMI ≥28 kg/m2). The patients were also asked to report any medical history, medical history, and the diagnosis of obesity, as well as any other symptoms of obesity (e.g., weight gain, weight loss).
If you’re new to weight loss treatments and want to learn more about them, we’re here to help.
Tablets like (the brand name for Orlistat) work by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs. Ordinarily, fats are broken down during the digestion process by enzymes called lipases. Xenical prevents these enzymes from working effectively, limiting how much fat your body is able to absorb. The remaining, undigested fat is then excreted.
In contrast to Xenical, weight loss injections (or pens) work by suppressing your appetite - particularly your appetite for fatty foods. Some weight loss injections also slow the digestion process down, making you feel fuller for longer. They’re simple to use - check out our for more information.
Clinical trials have repeatedly demonstrated the effectiveness of both weight loss tablets and injections, particularly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle., participants using lost almost 15% of their body weight over a 15-month period.
